Nanowrimo is coming up and although I’m glad I did it last year, it did result in, unfortunately, a failed manuscript. I’m taking a totally different approach with this new project, an approach akin to what I did when writing Cheer.
I’m a calendar girl, through and through. And I follow the brilliant Anne Lamott’s program of breaking writing up into short assignments. So I’ve scheduled myself to plot out 40 scenes, spending two days on each scene. Then I’m going to analyze the entire outline, ensuring that there’s enough tension and conflict (my perennial challenge) before I write a single word. I don’t want to jinx it but so far it’s going quite well. I’m happy with the story and this approach. Fingers crossed it continues to work. To all those soon-to-be Nanowrimo-ers out there, you have my utmost respect — it’s a great, rigorous project. It just didn’t work for me.
